Meet the Three New Characters: Jester, Doctor, and Ticket Taker

We're thrilled to introduce three enigmatic new characters that join Pierrot and Harlequin in The Freak Circus! Each character brings their own unique darkness and mystery to the circus, expanding the story's depth and complexity.

The Jester is the storyteller and observer of the circus. Through mesmerizing puppet performances, he reveals the tragic legend of Columbina - the story that lies at the heart of the animosity between Pierrot and Harlequin. The Jester's tent becomes a place where truth and fiction blur, where ancient secrets are unveiled through the art of storytelling.

The Doctor is a plague doctor who conducts unsettling experiments in the Cyan Tent. With his chilling demeanor and twisted medical philosophy, he explores the depths of fear and obedience. The Doctor's presence adds a layer of medical horror to the game, as he measures fear responses and pushes the boundaries of what it means to "heal".

The Ticket Taker guards the entrance to the Tent of Mirrors, a place where reality becomes distorted and reflections reveal the true, monstrous nature of those within the circus. He manipulates reflections to show you what others cannot see, warning you about the true nature of the circus monsters through twisted mirrors.

Each of these characters has their own dedicated character page where you can learn more about their backgrounds, personality traits, abilities, and relationships with other characters. Explore their stories and discover how they fit into the larger narrative of The Freak Circus.

These three new characters are now fully integrated into the game's Day 2 update, bringing new locations, interactions, and story paths for players to explore. Visit their character pages to dive deeper into their mysterious worlds!

Day 2 Update: New Characters and Darker Story

The Day 2 update has finally arrived! This major update significantly raises the stakes of the game, plunging players into a darker narrative involving kidnapping, psychological manipulation, and the tragic legend of Columbina that reveals the deep-seated animosity between Pierrot and Harlequin.

Day 2 begins with you waking up chained to a bed in an unfamiliar room inside the circus tent. Pierrot claims he drugged and kidnapped you to "protect" you from the others, showing his possessive and unstable nature. Meanwhile, Harlequin invades the room while Pierrot is away, highlighting the contrast between the two characters - while Pierrot wants to hide you away, Harlequin wants to "play" and hunt.

The update introduces three new mysterious characters: the Jester, who tells the tragic story of Columbina using puppets; the Doctor, a plague doctor who brings medical horror to the game; and the Ticket Taker, who manipulates reality through twisted reflections in the Tent of Mirrors.

Players can now explore specific attraction tents, each revealing different aspects of the circus's dark secrets. The Day 2 update also features a new Hidden Scenes System that adds depth and replayability, multiple endings based on your choices, and over 100 new images including character sprites, expressions, and backgrounds.

For a complete walkthrough and detailed guide to all the new content, check out our comprehensive Day 2 blog post which covers all the key events, new locations, character interactions, hidden scenes, and multiple endings you'll encounter during the second day of your journey through the circus.

Last devlog before the update (I Hope!)

I bring good news! This will be the last devlog before the update. Which means the next notification you get will be the update release!

It's planned to come out this month. I don't have an exact date yet, but I'll spend the next few days doing final tests and fixes! As soon as I have a confirmed date, I'll post it on my social media. Everything is already coded and currently being tested so I can finally release this update!

Some choices in the game are still causing small issues in certain routes, so that's basically what I'm fixing right now. It's a bit of work because of the number of choices and situations in this update, but as long as nothing crashes, it should be released before the end of the month.

Thank you all for your patience and support! The update is almost here!

Monthly update! So close!!

Monthly update! I was hoping to release the game before this monthly devlog, but as you can imagine, a lot of things came up plenty of code issues I keep having to revise and fix.

I can't give you an exact release date, though I would love to launch the update this month, especially since it's the month of horror! But I can't promise that… even if, as you probably know, it's very close to being done.

Only the final act still needs to be coded after that, things will move much faster! So far in this update, there are already over 100 new images, including new sprites and backgrounds, just to give you an idea.

Here's a quick roadmap so you can get a sense of what's left. Once I finish coding the remaining 5%, the next steps are:

Roadmap

  • Finishing the sprites for that last 5%
  • Adding the new sound effects and music
  • Full revision and testing of the update
  • Build tests for browser and Android
  • And then that's it the update will be ready to launch!

I'm trying to run more tests this time so there won't be as many errors, since the last release had quite a few that I had to fix later.

Weekly Update

I managed to finish coding the cyan tent, only 2 sprites left to complete that scene.(And once again I had to fix the Doctor's sprite… I really hope that doesn't happen with Jester.) And there are also code details and transitions that have not yet been fixed.

Now there are only the blue and purple tents left for the update's coding to be done.

The cyan tent made my code break so many times, it was exhausting. And since the other two tents are even more complex, I know it'll happen again. So just to reinforce: once I finish coding all the dialogues for The Freak Circus visual novel, then I'll be able to start talking about dates!

Weekly Update

Sorry for being a bit absent on social media, folks I've been really focused on finishing the part I started coding. When things don't work out, I get obsessed with fixing them until they finally run haha! I'm still at it… I can already say it won't be ready this month. My new expectation is around the middle of next month BUT that's not a guarantee. (Please be patient with me ;u;)

Now for the progress update! Almost half of one of the tents is already coded, though I don't have many sprites ready for this scene yet. Creating new sprites always takes a bit longer, and it's the part I test the most it's been a lot of work, and honestly I find drawing more tiring.

Doctor has already had his look adjusted twice during testing, Jester only once, and possibly each of them (Jester, Doctor, and Ticket Taker) will get a little animation. For more details about these new characters, check our Wiki page.

I think I can already say there's only about 13% left to go before finishing both the coding and the art.

Weekly Update

I'm working on one of the three characters! And I'm really excited (maybe hyperfocused on it). Once I finish presenting all three, The Freak Circus visual novel will move into its final stage! It's still going to take some time, especially with Jester's part. His tent will be challenging to program I keep coming up with a lot of visual ideas to create the right atmosphere for the scene. What does that mean? That even for a scene that lasts only a few seconds, I'll insist on showing several sprites if necessary to capture the right feeling. Well, I did manage to pull some reactions out of you with that!

Some of the previous errors were fixed, and a few sprites also needed adjustments to fit better into certain scenes. The game's menu font has some issues with translations, so that's still a problem I need to solve. Worst case scenario, I'll have to replace it but I still have a few alternatives to try before resorting to that.

One more thing! Don't worry guys, I'm not in the game! The name "Neko" in the screenshots is just to test the MC's lines!

It's easier for me to pay attention if the code calling the player's name works when I test it with my own name haha!

Weekly Update

I got a bunch of feedback on the beta version and I still haven't managed to fix all the little details. Honestly, I hadn't even noticed so many mistakes myself, haha.

Meanwhile, I also spotted a small issue in the script with a very specific route, so I had to pause and rewrite some scenes so they would fit both paths. Luckily, I caught it before moving forward.

Once that particular scene is ready, I'll finally start working on the tent scene for one of the characters, and man… that's going to be a lot of work…

Also, the theme for the next comic strip will be Pierrot's old outfits! Voted by the patrons! I'll work on it in my free time, so it might take a little while to come out.

Almost There!

Another monthly update for The Freak Circus visual novel, and we're getting really close to releasing this one!

There's about 15-20% of The Freak Circus visual novel dia 2 left to be coded, and that includes finished sprites. After that, the next stage should be a bit "faster" mostly the music and sound effects for The Freak Circus visual novel actualizacion.

I've done some beta testing with this update and there are still small parts to fix. The biggest challenge right now is that missing 20% of The Freak Circus visual novel dia 2, since it's packed with transitions and sprites, which makes it pretty complex and time-consuming.

Alongside Pierrot and Harlequin, this update will properly introduce you to Ticket Taker, Jester, and the Doctor in The Freak Circus visual novel - you probably remember them from the "Missing" bad end, right?

I'm hoping to release The Freak Circus visual novel actualizacion this month along with the store, but in the worst case it'll be pushed to next month. For now, enjoy a few more screenshots from The Freak Circus visual novel development!

Monthly Update!

Another month since The Freak Circus visual novel release! So here's more news about the progress on the next update!

Right now, half of The Freak Circus visual novel dia 2 is already coded, though not all of the new sprites are finished yet (and trust me, there are a lot of new sprites and CGs for The Freak Circus visual novel actualizacion).

This update will be a bit longer in terms of gameplay, since now you'll get to know a bit more about the other three characters from The Freak Circus visual novel circus: Jester, Doctor, and Ticket Taker.

On top of that, I'll be adding "hidden scenes" to The Freak Circus visual novel - little story segments you can unlock while playing, and you can access it in the menu. For more details about the game mechanics, check our Wiki page.

I'll also leave a few small secrets for you to spot in The Freak Circus visual novel if you pay attention to your choices!
